Kids Rec Room, aka The Den…Before pics and a plan
What our kids rec room looks like now and where we are headed with this makeover.
So, the kids rec room…also called the den or the ever so descriptive “brown couch area” (why? all of our couches are brown so this makes no sense). Anywho, it is in MAJOR need of a makeover. Like most rooms in our house, it is dated and boring. This is the area the kids hang out in. Whenever we have gatherings – Halloween parties, slumber parties, any kind of party – we hang out in the living room and the kids hang out in the den. Or what I am trying to call the den and they call the brown couch area.
So, here is what we are dealing with now.
Dark, drab, dull and dirty. The 4 D’s. It’s actually kind of cool to have this space. Both the kids rooms are off this area and they have a Jack and Jill bathroom on the back side of this room. But right now…ugh.
Want to see where we are going with this? You can head over and see the mood board and my pics for this space at my friend Kim’s site. She designed it, so I’m letting her reveal the fun part :).
Last week we were having 2 different set of people coming to visit and my husband suggested we clean the carpet again. I just couldn’t pay to have these old previous-owners-dog stains cleaned again. Every time they come to clean they say to me “these are going to come back”. And they do. And they are gross. And they are ugly. So, I ripped the carpet out. Instead of cleaning and getting ready for guests, I spent the day ripping carpet up. More on that later.
Hi Willie! As soon as company leaves and we recover from eating too much, I’m headed back to this room. First things first, I’m ripping the popcorn ceiling down. I’ve got a trick to show you how to do it super quick. Stay tuned 😉

What a great room! Yeah, I get the brown couch area, but what potential!! Love the fireplace!! I would definitely make it the centerpiece of the room, with the couch turned towards it!! Yeah, I know, ya gotta be able to see the TV…but why not make the TV a mirror over the fireplace? OK, I’m not a designer and I have NO clue as to the cost of doing this, but!! I can’t wait to see what your designer does with it – yeah, I popped over to check out her post on this room and the platform with the hammock is totally awesome!
Thanks Susan!! Actually, we are changing the couch so you can see the fireplace and the TV! Great idea, can’t wait until it all starts coming together.
