Kitchen Update – Halfway Through Phase One

Kitchen Update, phase one is underway and I wanted to share a quick update so you can get an idea of what we are doing and where we are going.

UncookieCutter.comI’m back…..was that scary?  I’m picturing Jack Nicolas when I say it.  Totally scary, I’m telling myself.  Anywho, after a lonnnnggggg summer road trip with the family, we came home to see phase one of our kitchen update.  Okay, well we came home to a completely torn apart kitchen. Have you seen the before photos?  Seriously the worst kitchen ever, go take a look here.  I am so excited to finally be working on our kitchen, but this part is hard to live with!  I keep telling myself kitchen remodels are the worst. While I normally try to DIY most stuff, I’ve hired my favorite contractor, Dave, to help me out on this one.

Anywho, while we were traveling, Dave sent me this picture.  He is literally raising the roof (woop). The original designer dropped the ceiling down to hit the top of the cabinets, which is just so funny.  So, we are taking it back up to match up with the rest of the houses’ angled ceilings.  Oh insulation!

The biggest impact I believe was cutting the hole in the wall.  It will have a six inch raised bar counter on the pool table side.  This is so exciting, although it was a bit nerve wracking to watch.  I thought for sure the whole wall would fall.  But, it is still standing and I think this will have a huge impact on opening up the kitchen.  As I’m sure you all know, the kitchen is where it is at.  People always congregate here, so I’m hoping this opening will keep people in the main area.  Plus, I’m really looking forward to my kids having a place to sit and do homework while I cook dinner.  That dream was the main reason we started on this whole kitchen update.

We also took down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, which made a huge impact!  More so than I ever thought, I don’t know why I wasn’t expecting that.

Now we have light again and the sheet rock started going up yesterday. The cabinets are coming the end of this week or next to be installed. Then the new oven, microwave and stovetop can go in.  Yippee!!!  Have I mentioned that we have a makeshift kitchen set up in our studio?  Complete with a hot plate?   A HOT PLATE!  Seriously, I didn’t even know they made hot plates anymore.  The kids are pretending this is their apartment (they aren’t cooking, haha).

So, phase one of our kitchen update is about halfway done.  If you are wondering about the phases, we basically are having to split this into three different projects.  Why?  ‘Cause kitchens are expensive, yo!  Seriously, so much money. Our completely completed post probably won’t be for two years or more.  But, you have to start somewhere!

If you want to follow along more with the updates, make sure to follow me over on Instagram!  I post tons of behind the scenes photos over there.

Have you redone a kitchen?  How did you live with the mess?  Ugh, so much dust!

Thanks for following along!

  1. Oh, wow! I do love it opened up. I’ve lived through 2 kitchen renovations, although the second wasn’t even close to as extreme as yours. To be honest, we ate a lot of pizza, mostly cause we were so tired and the dust made it impossible. I think eating out should be a factored in cost, lol.

    1. No kidding!! I’m trying to keep cooking but it took exactly 1 hour to get the water to boil for a pot of spaghetti the other night, so I am losing patience :).

  2. Wow, what a difference taking out that wall makes! And I agree – that insulation picture is crazy! I’m so excited for you, though – I know how badly you’ve been wanting to tackle this kitchen!
