One Room Challenge Spring 2018 – Kids Rec Room
For the One Room Challenge this go around, I’ve decided to finish the kids rec room and I’m so excited about all the DIY projects in this space!
This is the room our kids hang out in with each other, with their friends, etc. Â I want this space to be modern, fun and functional. Â To be honest, we have already started on this room. But, the ORC (one room challenge) is just the kick in the booty I need to finish it up. If you want to see the original post (with a link to the plans for this space)…check it out here.
The kiddos need space for sleepovers, crafting and gift wrapping supplies, a toy closet redo and just a general makeover. Â When we start, the room was dark, ugly, drab and the carpet was filled with old pet stains (barf). Â I had a couple of things to work around…first I needed to use the existing furniture and TV. Â It’s not the best looking stuff but budget just didn’t allow for all the changes and new furniture. Â Second, I am challenging myself to do this all alone. Â Except for moving heavy objects into place, I’m not getting any outside help. Â Yay for DIY!
First thing to go was the carpet. Â I’ll have more info on how we did that soon, but basically the story is we had company coming and I was so sick of that gross, disgusting carpet that I ripped it up all by myself one day. Â Just ripped it out. Â It was so satisfying. Â Stay tuned, and I’ll come back and update here once I write the post on what I did.
Look at that cute Willie dog!! Â I love her so much. Next we took down the popcorn ceiling. Â I have tips and tricks on how to do that quickly and easily here. Â It is my favorite way to update an outdated room. Â It lightens and brightens instantly.
Then it was time to paint. Â I used Behr Marquee in Off Broadway for the black and Dutch White for the white. Â These colors are great and have a purply undertone, so they work well with all the color that I’m going to add in.
Then I redid the toy closet. Â I Â found a way to store the Legos that seems to actually be working. Â Hallalujah.
Like I said, I wanted this space to be fun, so the next project was totally fun. Â I painted the doors and we are so happy with them!
For the past few weeks, I’ve been working on the craft & gift wrap station and it is so stinking cute I can’t wait to show you all next week. Â For now, I’m just working on the finishing touches. But, here is the before…eek!! Â Well, sort of before. Â I had just started demoing and remembered to take a picture. Â Why is there a sink here????
Okay, so that is where I am now. Â I’ll be posting about the carpet removal next week and then some more fun projects…take a look here for more info.

April I am excited to see your rec room renovation. It will look great with the lighter color palette, basements always tends to feel dark with the lack of windows. PS Willie looks like a great helper 🙂
Thanks Jen! Willie is…super sweet, haha. This isn’t even a basement, it’s just that drab in here!
This is such a great space to work with, April! A kids rec room? I better not show my kids before they expect one! Hehe. Can’t wait to see how this space unfolds! Good luck!
