My New RYOBI Garage Door Opener

Hello all! I’ve got to tell you guys I am way too excited about my new garage door opener. When we moved into “The Compound”, as we call it, we knew the garage door and opener were on the “must replace” list. But, so were about 400 other things in this house, so we held out as long as we could. Then about 3 months ago we finally couldn’t get the door closed anymore and we knew it was time.

Once we couldn’t get it closed anymore, we had our old, ugly, heavy, wooden, would-kill-somebody-if-it fell door replaced. We used Overhead door company and were very happy with them. The door is light and clean and pretty. But they said there was no way they could hook up the old opener. Here’s what we were dealing with. Not only was it ugly, but apparently it was going to kill someone as well.

We had to decide what we wanted. I did a little research and stubbled on this little gem from RYOBI – their new garage door opener. I wanted to try it out, cause it just looked so cool. I didn’t even realize there was much to a garage door opener, but this one has so many bells and whistles. Full disclosure, I contacted RYOBI and they did send me the opener to try out. All opinions are completely my own.

So, there are a couple of things that make this opener so unique. What made me want this particular opener was the app function and the modules.  With our last door, we had no way to close it from the outside. Now, I can close it from anywhere I have a wifi signal, which is awesome because I am constantly forgetting this! I have a garage full of tools, and I have left the house before, only to get somewhere and start worrying about the garage being open.

Yes, we named our house The Compound.  Because it looks…like a compound.  We are working on that.  Another feature I love about the app is that I can turn the light on and off from it.  I don’t know how many times I’ve tired to find the keyhole to the door in the dark because I couldn’t get the light on.  It’s also helpful cause the kids are always beating me home from school. Now I can just open the app and open the door for them before they get there.

 

See those little dots in the distance?  They are way quicker than me.  I can also close it from my outdoor keypad, or my car remotes. If you have Homelink it works with that too, but my truck doesn’t have that option. So, now I have 3 ways to get in and out, which means more security for me and probably saving on energy costs a bit because maybe I’ll actually keep the thing shut now!  That’s the plan anyway :).

The app also includes a troubleshooting and installation guide – basically the entire manual inside the app, so I don’t have to keep up with that!  Then there’s the module map.  Oh, the modules!  How I love the modules!

 

The modules are basically accessories you can plug into the opener.  I plugged in a retractable power cord and a bluetooth speaker. The opener is connected in the app to my wifi, so now I can jam out in the garage while I’m working on projects! I love that feature. You can also connect their “park assist” which I didn’t get because I’ve never once pulled my car in here. This garage is for working, yo!  I might have to go and get the fan though, I can see how that could be helpful!  Check out the full list of moduls you can hook up to the opener here.

 

In addition to all these great features, the garage door opener is super quiet and I was able to install it almost by myself. I did have to get my husband to hold it a few times so I could attach things to places, but overall a pretty easy installation. Of course, I’m a little OCD, so I had to lay out all the parts and pieces first :).

 

So, that’s it. Another project checked off the never ending to do list for this house. Not only is it way more functional now, it also looks better. Now if I can get the rest of the garage looking all pretty. That’s WAY down on the list though :).
