Ugliest kitchen in America? Mine just might be…
Hello and welcome back. Usually here on this blog, I only share the pretty, staged and cleaned up parts of our home. Whenever I start a room renovation, I share a real life before photo, but that’s about it. Well, we are just starting to think about our kitchen renovation and I decided to share with you what might be the ugliest kitchen in America and what we are planning to do. So, here we go on a behind-the-scenes tour of this atrocity.
Update: See the progress here.
So, when you first come into the kitchen from the garage, there is a little drop-zone area (I’ll get to that in a minute) and then you walk into…the ugliest kitchen ever.
No, your eyes do not deceive you, that is it. This is what I’ve been dealing with for two years.
We honestly thought the kitchen would be the first thing to go, but we had to fix the siding and paint the outside first, then the pool needed major repairs, so money was gone. Now, hopefully, after two years, we can get started. We want to turn this into more of a galley kitchen and open up the space that heads into the dining room (where the bifold doors are) more.
The first thing we are going to do is take out this coat closet. The front door is to the left, the kitchen is to the right. We are going to turn this into a solid wall, with the door to the pantry going into the kitchen. Don’t worry – we have no shortness of closets in this house – there is ANOTHER closet on the other side of the front door.
That door will lead into what is now the “drop zone” area. Where we come in and drop everything, so it looks like this on a good day. I hate drop zones, can’t wait to turn this into more of a command center, with hooks and a place for everything. I have a plan (said in my most evil voice).
This whole area is coming out and we will expand the kitchen all the way to the outer wall. Bye bye “drop zone”, hello breakfast table! One of the reasons we got such a great deal on this house is this kitchen. It’s a 4500 sq ft house in a great neighborhood with a pool and nobody wanted it. This space is tiny. But, we are going to change all that!
Can you see it? That ugly wallpapered wall is going away. Then, new french doors and an island will go in front of them.
The kitchen will turn into a galley kitchen, going to move the fridge alongside the sink and the oven to where the fridge is. All the cabinets, gone in leiu of open shelves and hanging racks.
We are going to put a new long countertop in along where the fridge is now and where the oven will be and cut a big opening in that wall so that the kitchen is more opened up to the living/gaming area. So, the other side will have bar stools looking into the kitchen.
The kitchen is behind the brick wall. We love the brick and didn’t’ want to take it down, but we will cut a hole in it and put the barstools on this side.
Back to the kitchen. A couple of more horrid picks. Isn’t it nice my husbands tries with the pretty flowers?
I love that someone just added this cheap ridiculous white cabinet. It’s just so ridiculous (and another nook for people to put stuff).
So, that’s about it. This will probably be a two or more year project, it will be slow going, but I will come back and update as we finish certain areas. Here is a breakdown of the projects.
Add a Pantry/Get rid of Closet
Tear down wall and extend kitchen all the way to the garage
Cut hole in brick wall
Move appliances
Add cabinets/countertops
Replace french doors and add island
Here we go, feel free to join us on our Ugliest Kitchen ever renovation. I can’t WAIT to get started. See some of our other room renovations HERE.
Thanks for stopping by!

Pin for later!
I think we have that same sink and fridge, and our kitchen is pretty ugly too. I can’t wait to see how yours turns out. The kitchen is on my list, but I am terrified of that undertaking! 🙂
Thanks Mary! It is scary, but I finally got my husband on board, so I’m seizing the opportunity before he changes his mind :).
Hello April, I love to decorate and well manage the kitchen room. You have such a great home and awesome photography. We got such a great deal for the kitchen. I like your household things. I want same as yours. Thanks for sharing your lovely home pictures. Keep sharing!
Thanks Kate!
Our kitchen should be one of the clean and organized space in our respective home. Thus, re doing it is way too costly. I would love to see your updates on how you were able to accomplished your desired project. Please keep posting.
Will do!
